Mshery's Streak Ends as Yanga Triumphs Over Coastal Union

March 13, 2025

In a thrilling FA Cup Round of 32 encounter at KMC Complex in Dar es Salaam, Yanga secured a commanding 3-1 victory over Coastal Union. However, the match marked an unexpected turning point for goalkeeper Abuutwalib Mshery, who conceded his first goal against Coastal Union since joining Yanga, ending his 270-minute clean sheet streak against the team.

Mshery's Unbeaten Record Broken

Prior to this match, Mshery had maintained a flawless defensive record against Coastal Union, having never conceded a goal in their previous encounters. His streak, which extended to 360 minutes—including his tenure with Mtibwa Sugar—came to an end when Miraji Abdallah found the back of the net in the 18th minute. The goal was a result of a powerful strike from outside the box, capitalizing on a lost possession by Clement Mzize.

Yanga's Path to Victory

Despite the setback, Yanga responded emphatically with goals from Maxi Nzengeli, who scored twice in the 2nd and 15th minutes, and Clement Mzize, who sealed the victory in the 21st minute. With this win, Yanga advanced to the Round of 16, where they will face Songea United.

Mshery's Previous Performances Against Coastal Union

Mshery joined Yanga during the mid-season transfer window in 2021-2022, making an immediate impact. His first encounter against Coastal Union as a Yanga player was on January 16, 2022, in an away match at Mkwakwani, where he maintained a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory with goals from Fiston Mayele (41st minute) and Saido Ntibazonkiza (90th minute).

He continued his dominance in a crucial title race match on June 15, 2022, where Yanga triumphed 3-0, with Mayele netting twice (35th and 68th minutes) and Chico Ushindi adding another in the 52nd minute.

The streak persisted into the 2022-2023 season when Yanga defeated Coastal Union 2-0 on August 20, 2022, thanks to goals from Bernard Morrison (4th minute) and Mayele (68th minute). However, today's FA Cup fixture marked the first time Coastal Union breached Mshery's defense.

Yanga's Title Pursuit

Yanga remains in strong contention for their fourth consecutive FA Cup title. In the previous round, they dominated Copco with a 5-0 win in the Round of 64. With momentum on their side, they now prepare for their upcoming clash against Songea United, aiming to extend their dominance in domestic competitions.
