Fake Doctor Sentenced to Six Months in Jail for Impersonation at Muhimbili Hospital

Dar es Salaam, March 13, 2025 – A 26-year-old man, John Batebuye, has been sentenced to six months in prison by the Kariakoo Primary Court after being found guilty of impersonating a government employee at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH).

Batebuye, a resident of Kigamboni, was apprehended at the hospital on March 11, 2025, while pretending to be a medical doctor. The court heard that the accused knowingly misrepresented himself as a qualified physician within the facility, despite having no medical credentials.

Presiding over the case, Magistrate Scholastic Odoyo delivered the verdict after Batebuye pleaded guilty to the charges.

"The accused has been convicted as charged, and this court sentences him to six months in prison as a deterrent to others who might attempt similar offenses," Magistrate Odoyo stated.

Arrest and Court Proceedings

The case was brought before the court for a formal reading of the charges, during which Batebuye immediately admitted his wrongdoing. This prompted the court to convict him on the spot and proceed with sentencing.

Before the ruling, the accused pleaded for leniency, citing family obligations.

"Your Honor, I sincerely regret my actions and request the court's mercy. I will not repeat this mistake, and I have a family that depends on me," Batebuye pleaded.

However, the court maintained that his actions violated the law and warranted punishment to serve as a lesson for others.

Details of the Incident

Court clerk Shabani Hamad outlined the details of the offense, confirming that Batebuye committed the crime on March 11, 2025, within Ilala District at Muhimbili National Hospital.

At approximately 2:00 PM, the suspect was apprehended by the hospital’s administrative officer, Ramadhani Bakari, 45, who became suspicious of his activities. Upon questioning, Batebuye falsely claimed to be a licensed medical practitioner, fully aware that his assertions were untrue.

His conduct directly contravened Tanzanian law, leading to his immediate arrest and subsequent legal proceedings.

This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals impersonating medical professionals, potentially putting patients’ lives at risk. Authorities have reiterated the importance of verifying credentials within healthcare institutions to prevent such occurrences.
