DR Congo President Responds to M23 Crisis with Unity Plan
In response to M23 rebellion, DR Congo’s Tshisekedi plans to form a national unity government amid growing criticism.

DR Congo President Announces Unity Government Amid Eastern Crisis
As tensions escalate over the crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), President Felix Tshisekedi has revealed plans to form a national unity government. The move comes as he faces growing domestic pressure regarding his handling of the M23 rebel offensive, which is backed by Rwanda. The rebellion has seized vast areas in the eastern provinces, including regions rich in valuable mineral resources, sparking fears of an extended conflict that could destabilize the country further.
Tshisekedi’s announcement, made on Saturday through his spokesperson Tina Salama, signifies a response to the opposition’s growing criticism of his leadership. The president’s decision to launch a unity government follows a year of military setbacks in the North and South Kivu regions, where the Congolese army has suffered significant losses to the M23. Opposition figures have accused Tshisekedi of failing to effectively manage the military crisis, with some even predicting the collapse of his presidency.
At a meeting of the ruling Sacred Union coalition, Tshisekedi urged his allies to focus on the external threat rather than internal divisions. "We must unite...let's stand together to face the enemy," he said, rallying his party members to prioritize national unity.
Despite Tshisekedi’s calls for solidarity, opposition leaders, including Herve Diakiese, have openly criticized his response to the crisis. Diakiese stated, “His management is one of the causes of the current crisis,” asserting that the president is more focused on maintaining his grip on power than addressing the pressing needs of the country. Diakiese added, "We are more concerned with saving Congo, and that can be achieved with or without him."
As the situation unfolds, the announcement of a unity government appears to be a strategic effort by Tshisekedi to shore up support amid growing calls for accountability and reform. Further details on the leadership changes within the coalition are expected, but for now, Tshisekedi’s response to the crisis remains a point of contention in the national debate.
