Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk Urges Team to Shine in PSG Clash Ahead of Champions League Round of 16
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has called on his teammates to rise to the occasion and deliver their best performance in their upcoming Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). The Reds will face the Ligue 1 champions in the first leg of their Round of 16 fixture on Wednesday in Paris, with both teams sitting comfortably atop their respective leagues.
Ahead of the highly anticipated encounter, Van Dijk emphasized the importance of consistency and focus at this stage of the competition. Both Liverpool and PSG have dominated their domestic leagues, each holding a commanding 13-point lead at the summit, but Van Dijk knows that the stakes in the Champions League are even higher.
In an interview with reporters, the Dutch defender said, “It’s going to be a great game, especially as we’re up against a team that’s in excellent form. PSG performed well in their last Champions League match against Brest, and it’s clear that they are in top shape. These are the types of games you want to be a part of, and I’m really looking forward to it.”
Van Dijk also highlighted the importance of using the time before the match to rest and reflect, noting, “We’ve had a chance to spend some time with our families and reflect on the past few weeks. Now, we focus on what’s ahead, and this is where we want to be—competing at the highest level.”
Looking ahead to the clash, the Liverpool captain underscored the significance of the knockout stages, where mistakes cannot be afforded. He stated, “Yes, it definitely feels like the level of competition goes up a notch now that we’re in the knockout stages. There’s no room for errors or poor performances. There are only two games to get through, and we have to make sure we’re at our best to deserve to advance.”
Van Dijk went on to stress the necessity of giving everything for the team, saying, “You have to fight for it. You have to do everything in your power to win the game. That’s exactly what we’ll be aiming for, but we also recognize the quality of PSG. We’ll be mindful of them in Paris, and of course, when they come to Anfield. These are the nights that every player wants to perform in—nights that allow you to show the world what you’re capable of.”
After their high-profile clash in Paris, Liverpool will return to Premier League action on Saturday when they host Southampton at Anfield, as they look to continue their domestic dominance.
