Morogoro, Tanzania – Tragedy struck in Kalenga village, Mofu ward, Mlimba District, when two members of the same family lost their lives after being struck by lightning while seeking shelter from heavy rain. A third individual, a woman, suffered shock from the incident but is reported to be in stable condition.
According to Mofu Ward Councilor Graison Mgonela, the incident occurred at approximately 5:00 PM on March 13, 2025, during a downpour accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms. The victims, identified as Ally Abdallah and his nephew Kulwa Paulo, were residents of the Mofu area.
Mgonela explained that the victims, caught in the storm while working on their farm, sought refuge under a tree to avoid getting drenched. Meanwhile, a woman known as Mama Ibu ran to a nearby hut for shelter. Unfortunately, lightning struck the tree, instantly killing Abdallah and Paulo. Mama Ibu, though uninjured, experienced severe shock from the incident but has since recovered.
"This is the first time such an event has occurred in our ward, and it has deeply shocked and saddened the local community," Mgonela stated.
Confirming the fatalities, Agripinus Manyerere, the Chief Medical Officer at Mofu Dispensary, noted that one of the bodies has been transferred to St. Francis Hospital for preservation before being transported to Tanga, the victims' hometown.
The incident has sparked renewed discussions on the dangers of seeking shelter under trees during thunderstorms, as well as the need for increased public awareness and lightning protection measures in rural areas.
