TARURA Board Evaluates Infrastructure Projects Using Ecoroads Technology
Dodoma | March 14, 2025
DODOMA: The Advisory Board of the Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) has conducted an on-site evaluation of key road and bridge construction projects in Dodoma Region, where Ecoroads technology is being utilized to enhance cost efficiency and sustainability.
During the inspection, board members assessed the progress of a 6.95-kilometer road construction in Chamwino District, as well as a 26.44-meter-long, 7-meter-wide stone bridge in Nghong’ona Ward. These projects incorporate innovative techniques aimed at reducing construction expenses while maintaining structural integrity.
Assessing Ecoroads Technology for Broader Application
Following the site visit, Engineer Florian Kabaka, Chairman of the TARURA Advisory Board, underscored the importance of evaluating the viability of Ecoroads technology for potential national implementation.
“This technology is still new to us, and continuous assessment is necessary to determine its long-term suitability,” he stated. “The road has been in use for seven months, and while early indicators are promising, we must analyze how well it performs under our country’s soil and environmental conditions before considering widespread adoption.”
The Cost-Efficiency of Stone Bridges
Engineer Kabaka also highlighted the advantages of stone bridges, emphasizing their affordability and resilience compared to concrete and steel alternatives. He stressed the need for ongoing supervision and maintenance to ensure their durability over time.
“Stone bridges have proven to be both effective and cost-efficient. However, TARURA must maintain regular oversight to safeguard their longevity,” he said.
Additionally, he urged local communities to play an active role in protecting public infrastructure by reporting any damage immediately to facilitate prompt repairs.
Ecoroads Technology: Reducing Costs with Chemical Additives
TARURA’s Regional Manager for Dodoma, Engineer Edward Lemelo, provided further insight into Ecoroads technology, explaining that it involves the use of chemical additives mixed with soil to significantly lower road construction costs.
He reassured that the agency is closely monitoring the technology’s effectiveness to evaluate its potential for expansion across Tanzania.
Engineer Lemelo also noted the progress of stone bridge construction in Dodoma, stating that nine bridges have already been completed, with eight more currently under development. Looking ahead, TARURA plans to construct two large bridges in the upcoming financial year, bringing the total number of stone bridges in the region to 19 within a short period.
Both engineers expressed optimism about the continued integration of cost-effective, innovative technologies to improve Tanzania’s infrastructure while maintaining budgetary efficiency.
