Airtel Tanzania Warns Customers Against Rising Mobile Money Fraud

Dar es Salaam – Airtel Tanzania has issued a strong warning to its customers, urging heightened vigilance amid increasing incidents of mobile money fraud. Scammers are employing deceptive tactics, including fraudulent messages and phone calls, to trick unsuspecting individuals into transferring funds.

Speaking at Airtel Tanzania’s headquarters, Corporate Communications Director Ms. Beatrice Singano cautioned customers against responding to messages from unknown numbers soliciting money under false pretenses. These scams often involve fabricated donation requests, spiritual service payments, or other fraudulent schemes.

"Customers should be cautious of calls or messages from numbers other than 100 pretending to be Airtel representatives. We do not use any other numbers to communicate with our customers," Ms. Singano emphasized.

She clarified that official communication from Airtel Tanzania is only conducted via the customer care number 100, urging the public to disregard any messages or calls from other numbers falsely claiming to represent the company.

Protecting Customers Against Fraud

Ms. Singano highlighted that many Tanzanians fall victim to mobile money fraud due to receiving deceptive messages from unknown numbers. In some cases, victims mistakenly believe they are communicating with family, friends, or legitimate organizations.

To prevent financial losses, customers are advised to verify all payment requests before making transactions and to remain cautious of unsolicited messages asking for money.

Additionally, Ms. Singano strongly urged Airtel users to safeguard their four-digit PIN and refrain from sharing it with anyone—even close acquaintances.

"The PIN is strictly confidential and should only be known by the account holder. Sharing it with anyone, even those close to you, increases the risk of unauthorized access," she warned.

Airtel’s Commitment to Customer Protection

Reaffirming its commitment to customer security, Airtel Tanzania continues to implement measures aimed at combating fraud. Customers are encouraged to stay informed, report suspicious activities, and take necessary precautions to safeguard their mobile money accounts.

For enhanced protection, Ms. Singano advised customers to immediately report stolen phones to the police and forward suspicious numbers to 15040 for investigation.

Moreover, she recommended that customers regularly check the numbers linked to their NIDA Identification Number by dialing *106# to detect and prevent unauthorized SIM card registration.

"These measures help customers detect and block fraudulent activities linked to their identity, ensuring enhanced security," she added.

Airtel Tanzania remains committed to raising awareness and strengthening fraud prevention strategies to protect customers from financial losses.
