Abigail Chams and Harmonize Set Their Sights on Grammy Awards

In a powerful demonstration of their enduring collaboration, Tanzanian artists Abigail Chams and Harmonize have unveiled a new project with the ultimate aim of winning one of the most coveted awards in the music world—the Grammy. This comes nearly three years after the Grammy Awards expanded their categories to include African music, with the Best African Music Performance award already recognizing winners such as Tyla and Tems.

The Grammy Awards, which debuted in 1959 under the name Gramophone, have grown to become the premier international music accolades. Today, Beyoncé Knowles holds the record for the most Grammy wins globally, while Benin’s Angelique Kidjo stands as the most awarded African artist in Grammy history.

Building on this momentum, Harmonize and Chams have continued to strengthen their professional bond, working together on their latest track, which aims to shine on the global stage. Their shared goal is not just to produce quality music but also to claim major awards, and they’ve embraced the term "Grammy Gang" as they work toward this ambition. Their recent single, "Me Too" (2025), produced by B Boy Beats and directed by award-winning filmmaker Kenny, has already attracted substantial attention. The song’s music video has amassed over 1.2 million views on YouTube, and the song has topped the Apple Music Tanzania charts, making Chams the first female artist in the country to achieve this milestone in 2025.

"I live for music, and this is a dream come true," Chams commented. "I want to thank everyone who has been part of this journey with me. 'Me Too' is the biggest hit in the country on all streaming platforms."

This release follows Chams’ recent appearance in Harmonize’s "Furaha" (2025), another song that is currently performing well across various music platforms. Previously, the pair had collaborated on two successful songs: "Closer" (2022) by Chams and "Leave Me Alone" (2022) from Harmonize’s third album, Made For Us (2022), which won accolades at the Tanzanian Music Awards (TMA).

Chams’ musical journey began at the tender age of five when she first learned to play the piano, and by eight, she had added violin, guitar, drums, and flute to her repertoire. With time, she began recording her work and sharing it on her social media platforms, quickly gaining recognition within the Bongo Fleva scene. Today, she is one of the leading female artists in the genre.

Her breakthrough came in 2020 with the release of her song "Reimagine," which led to a partnership with UNICEF Tanzania, where she also performed at Expo 2020 in Dubai. In 2022, Chams signed with RockStar Africa and later secured a major deal with Sony Music Entertainment Africa, which now oversees her latest project with Harmonize.

After signing the deal, Chams expressed her ambitious goal of one day winning the prestigious Grammy and BET awards. “My mission is to take Bongo Fleva and Tanzanian music to a global stage, and right now, I am focusing on the Grammys. I know it’s a goal that is within my reach,” she said.

Later this year, Chams and Harmonize could submit their work for Grammy 2026 nominations, with African artists now having more opportunities for recognition following the introduction of their own category.

In the most recent Grammy Awards (67th edition, 2025), Nigerian artist Tems claimed the Best African Music Performance award for her hit "Love Me Jeje" (2024), defeating major African stars like Asake, Burna Boy, Yemi Alade, and Davido. Tems, who rose to global prominence following her collaboration with Wizkid on "Essence" (2020), is the second African artist to win this category, following Tyla from South Africa, who won in 2024 for "Water" (2023).

Angelique Kidjo, a legendary musician from Benin, holds the record for the most Grammy wins by an African solo artist, with five victories spanning over four decades, during which she released 16 albums.
