MSF Reaffirms Commitment to Epidemic Response in Tanzania
March 14, 2025
The international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Tanzania’s Ministry of Health in combating epidemic outbreaks should its assistance be required.
The statement was issued today, March 14, 2025, by MSF-Tanzania’s Head of Mission, Tommaso Santo, following Tanzania’s official declaration that the country is now free from the Marburg virus outbreak. The announcement came after 42 consecutive days without any new reported cases. The outbreak had primarily affected the Kagera region, resulting in several confirmed infections and fatalities.
MSF’s Role in Containing the Marburg Virus
During the outbreak, MSF collaborated closely with Tanzania’s Ministry of Health by deploying experienced response teams to aid in containment efforts. The organization provided extensive training for healthcare workers across more than 30 medical facilities, improved isolation unit infrastructure, and established designated areas for the proper donning and removal of protective gear. Additionally, MSF enhanced laundry facilities to ensure hygiene standards were met and managed the safe disposal of contaminated protective clothing and medical equipment.
Reflecting on MSF’s contributions, Tommaso Santo highlighted the organization’s extensive experience in epidemic response over the past two years, including its work in managing cholera, measles, and Marburg outbreaks in Tanzania.
“We strive to be a trusted medical partner, not only in emergency epidemic response but also in addressing natural disasters and other health crises,” Santo stated.
Recognition from Health Authorities
Dr. Michael Kiremeji, Director of the Emergency Medical Unit for Marburg in Biharamulo, praised MSF’s contributions, emphasizing the organization’s crucial role in emergency situations. He assured that in the event of future outbreaks, immediate medical support would be mobilized to ensure timely and effective patient care.
Strengthening Public Awareness and Prevention
Looking ahead, MSF has committed to continuing its efforts to raise public awareness about Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers (VHFs). This will be achieved through targeted community outreach initiatives, public engagement strategies, and health education campaigns aimed at reinforcing preventive measures against such outbreaks.
With MSF’s ongoing support, Tanzania remains poised to respond effectively to future public health emergencies, ensuring the safety and well-being of its communities.
