Why Travelers Choose Between SGR and Buses: An In-Depth Analysis

DAR ES SALAAM: Tanzania’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) electric trains have revolutionized long-distance travel, offering a faster and more comfortable alternative to buses. However, buses remain a preferred choice for many. What influences passengers’ decisions when selecting their mode of transport? A recent survey and interviews conducted by Daily News shed light on the factors driving these preferences.

For many passengers, the SGR is the preferred option due to its superior quality of service. The electric trains provide a reliable and rapid means of transport, connecting major cities with ease, which is vital for businesses and economic growth.

"I always choose the SGR because it’s comfortable, safe, and much quicker than buses," said Mr. James Mwambungu, a frequent traveler. This preference is echoed by many who value the modern amenities, smooth ride, and reduced travel time that make long journeys more manageable.

Ms. Rahel John, a resident of Dodoma, also commended the efficiency of the SGR, adding, "The world is amazed by what is happening in Tanzania." She emphasized the pride Tanzanians feel as they witness the development of their country’s infrastructure.

Despite the advantages of the SGR, buses continue to draw a large number of passengers. "With buses, I can travel at any time without having to worry about rigid schedules," said Aisha Hassan, a businesswoman from Dar es Salaam. She pointed out that bus stations are more conveniently located than SGR stations, which are sometimes situated far from city centers, making them less accessible for those with unpredictable schedules or urgent travel needs.

Additionally, John Palangyo, a wholesale supplier, highlighted the flexibility buses offer in terms of luggage. "On the train, I have to adhere to strict luggage regulations," he noted. "With buses, I have more flexibility." This factor is crucial for passengers carrying large or bulky items, further contributing to the enduring appeal of bus travel.

Despite the SGR’s success, it faces challenges that may impact its attractiveness to some travelers. One such issue is ticketing accessibility. Mr. Hamis Hassan shared his frustration, stating, "There’s a lack of ticket offices in convenient locations." He added that the inconvenience and extra costs associated with traveling to distant SGR stations for tickets are significant barriers to the train’s wider adoption.

To address this issue, Fred Mwanjala, the Head of Public Relations at the Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC), commented, "We have received feedback from Tanzanians asking us to appoint ticketing agents, and we are working on it." However, Mwanjala also noted that the TRC faces challenges with individuals illegally appointing themselves as agents, leading to fraudulent activities and inflated charges. "Some of these individuals have been arrested, and we are working with the authorities to take legal action," he explained.

As part of its expansion plans, the TRC is set to begin serving cargo transporters soon, having already received 264 freight wagons from China. This is part of a larger consignment aimed at bolstering the SGR’s freight capacity.

University student Miriam Simbila suggested that the addition of affordable shuttle services connecting SGR stations to central urban areas would significantly improve the train’s accessibility, making it even more attractive to a broader range of passengers.
