Tragic Collision in Dodoma Claims Five Lives, Leaves 49 Injured

Five individuals have tragically lost their lives, and 49 others have sustained injuries following a collision between an AN Classic passenger bus and a lorry in Dodoma. The fatal crash took place in the Chigongwe area of the region on the evening of March 3, 2025, at around 10 pm.

The bus, which was en route from Dodoma to Kigoma, collided with the lorry while attempting to overtake it, causing the driver to lose control. The resulting crash forced the bus off the road, leading to the vehicle overturning. According to Acting Dodoma Regional Police Commander, Anania Amo, five lives were claimed in the accident, with three men and two women among the deceased.

Injuries were widespread, with 26 men and 23 women among the 49 people taken to Dodoma Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. One survivor was transferred to Benjamin Mkapa Hospital for more specialized care.

This is not the first accident involving AN Classic buses. The company has been involved in a series of incidents, including one on September 6, 2024, in which a bus traveling from Mbeya to Tabora crashed, killing 12 and injuring 36 others. In another incident, a bus traveling from Tabora to Mbeya collided with another vehicle in the Makongorosi area, Chunya District, on December 7, 2022, resulting in one death and four injuries.

In a broader context, road safety in Tanzania continues to be a concern. Data from the Traffic Police Division reveals that between July and September 2024, 453 lives were lost in road accidents, a slight decrease from the 477 fatalities in the same period the previous year. Despite this decrease, the number of injuries reported in 2024 stood at 835, up from 782 in 2023. Primary causes of these accidents include speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, poor road infrastructure, mechanical failures, and general driver negligence.
