"Visas have become a major hurdle for African students in countries like the US and the UK," explains Kassam. "Additionally, some European nations have increased tuition fees, making education more expensive than ever before."

Dr. Josephine Onyia, a senior recruiter at the University of Wollongong in Dubai, echoes this sentiment, noting that the number of Tanzanian students at the university has risen dramatically. Five years ago, the institution had no Tanzanian students; today, that number has increased to 70, with even more applicants. "Many Tanzanian families find Dubai a safer and culturally more suitable environment, particularly in light of the political changes in the West," says Dr. Onyia.

Safety and Affordability: Key Attractions of Dubai

One of the most appealing aspects of Dubai for Tanzanian students is the city's reputation for safety. Unlike many Western countries, where gun violence, racial discrimination, and political instability are concerns, Dubai offers a secure environment. "Parents feel reassured knowing that their children will be in a city that prioritizes safety," Kassam adds.

Additionally, Dubai offers competitive tuition fees and lower living costs compared to Western nations. Contrary to popular belief, Dubai is not as expensive as it may seem. "A degree at Heriot-Watt University in the UK can cost around £30,000 per year, but the same degree at its Dubai campus costs just $15,000," Kassam explains. "You can live in Dubai for as little as $6,000 per year, far cheaper than the costs associated with studying in the US or UK."

Political and Policy Shifts Fuel Growing Interest

Tanzanian students are not the only ones seeking alternatives to Western education destinations. Recent shifts in US immigration policies, including measures signed by former President Donald Trump, have created additional uncertainty for international students. Executive orders targeting individuals espousing "hateful ideologies" have further fueled concerns about the safety and political climate in the US for foreign students.

Dr. Simiyu Mbani, an international relations expert, observes that such developments naturally lead students and parents to seek safer and more stable places for education. "Dubai is currently one of the most favorable destinations for international students," he states.

A Personal Shift: Tanzanian Students Share Their Experiences

The personal stories of Tanzanian students further highlight the appeal of Dubai. Neema Masanja, who initially enrolled in a US university but later transferred to Dubai, describes the decision as life-changing. "In the US, I struggled with visa issues and racial discrimination," she recalls. "Dubai offered me a secure and culturally friendly environment. It was the best decision I made."

Similarly, Amos Ndunguru, who had planned to study in the UK, faced challenges securing a student visa. After being rejected twice, he turned to Dubai and found the entry process much easier. "Dubai gave me the opportunity to pursue my degree without the anxiety I faced in the UK," he explains.

Government Support Driving Dubai’s Appeal

Dubai's government has played a pivotal role in shaping the city as a top destination for higher education. In January 2021, the UAE government introduced long-term residence visas for international students, enabling them to bring their families under certain financial conditions. Furthermore, the Education 33 (E33) strategy, announced in 2024, aims to increase the number of international students in the UAE to 50% by 2033.

"Unlike the lengthy and complex visa procedures in the US and UK, Dubai's student visa process is relatively simple," says Kassam. "As long as students have their tuition fees covered, they do not need to provide extensive financial documentation."

Moreover, Dubai's strategic location as a global business hub offers students access to valuable internship and employment opportunities in sectors like finance, technology, tourism, and healthcare. Dr. Mbani emphasizes that this offers a distinct advantage for students seeking to build careers post-graduation.

The Road Ahead: Dubai’s Growing Presence

Despite its increasing popularity, Dubai is still relatively new as an education destination for Tanzanians. "There is still a lack of awareness among parents and students," says Dr. Thomas Jabir, an education consultant. "Many assume that Dubai is too expensive or lacks top-tier universities. It's crucial for agencies to help shift this perception."

Education experts also suggest that Tanzanian high schools should offer more guidance on alternative study destinations. "Students should be made aware of the diverse education options available beyond the traditional Western routes," advises Dr. Felista Mmbaga, an education policy expert.
