Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Attracts 2.9M Tourists, Earns TZS 694B

Ngorongoro Conservation Area Generates TZS 694 Billion from Tourism Over Four Years

March 11, 2025

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) has generated TZS 694 billion in revenue from tourism, attracting 2.9 million visitors between July 2021 and February 2025.

Speaking in Dodoma, Dr. Elirehema Dorie, NCAA’s Commissioner of Conservation, outlined the achievements of the Sixth Phase Government in tourism and conservation over the past four years.

Steady Growth in Tourism and Revenue

Dr. Dorie highlighted that in the 2021/2022 fiscal year, the conservation area welcomed 425,386 tourists, including 228,810 international visitors and 196,576 domestic travelers, generating TZS 91.13 billion in revenue.

"Ngorongoro is among the most visited tourist destinations in Tanzania, offering breathtaking landscapes, abundant wildlife, and a rich cultural and archaeological heritage. This unique appeal makes it a key contributor to the country’s tourism industry," Dr. Dorie stated.

In 2022/2023, visitor numbers rose to 752,232, with 458,351 international tourists and 293,881 domestic visitors, contributing TZS 171.257 billion in revenue.

The 2023/2024 period saw a further increase, with 908,627 visitors (553,875 international, 354,752 domestic), generating TZS 219.547 billion.

For the 2024/2025 fiscal year, between July 2024 and February 2025, 830,295 tourists have already visited the area (509,610 international, 320,685 domestic), contributing TZS 212 billion to the economy.

With the financial year still ongoing, NCAA anticipates surpassing its initial target of TZS 230 billion, with projections indicating over one million visitors by the end of the period. So far, the authority has already achieved 92% of its revenue target.

Royal Tour Documentary Boosts Tourism

Dr. Dorie credited the notable rise in tourism to President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s strategic initiatives, particularly the Royal Tour and Amazing Tanzania documentaries, which have significantly enhanced Tanzania’s global visibility as a prime tourist destination.

Other contributing factors include government and private-sector collaborations, strategic marketing initiatives, and improved conservation and hospitality services.

Six Strategic Plans to Strengthen Tourism

To further bolster the tourism sector, NCAA has unveiled six key strategies, including:

  1. Enhancing digital technology, improving social media presence, official websites, and implementing an advanced online ticketing system.
  2. Leveraging livestreaming technology to showcase Ngorongoro’s attractions to a global audience.
  3. Developing targeted digital marketing campaigns to attract diverse international markets.
  4. Strengthening partnerships with key stakeholders in the tourism industry.
  5. Collaborating with transport providers, hotels, and tour operators to enhance visitor experiences.
  6. Participating in major international tourism expos, such as WTM London and ITB Berlin, to expand Tanzania’s reach in the global travel industry.

These initiatives aim to sustain Ngorongoro’s status as a top-tier global tourist attraction, ensuring continued economic growth and conservation success.
