VETA Launches Commercial Arm, Expands Skills Training with 14 Centers

March 4, 2025

The Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) has officially launched a new commercial venture aimed at boosting local production and reducing dependency on government funding.

Anthony Kasore, the Director-General of VETA, made the announcement while presenting a report on the authority's achievements and progress during the first four years of the Sixth Government.

Speaking to journalists in Dodoma, Kasore explained that the newly established company would be focused on commercializing VETA's innovative products, services, and expertise. He revealed that the company has already been registered under Certificate No. 177837210 and is set to begin offering services through various contracts.

“The primary goal of this initiative is to increase domestic production while reducing reliance on government subsidies,” Kasore stated.

He further emphasized that the commercial venture would create more opportunities for students to engage in practical training, providing them with hands-on experience and fostering entrepreneurial skills. This initiative is particularly designed for students and graduates from VETA training institutions.

VETA, according to Kasore, is also implementing a strategic plan to provide training that meets international standards. This is in response to data from the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC), which shows that 1,188 projects have been registered, generating 345,464 jobs between March 2021 and March 2024.

“We are aiming to achieve this through our 14 centers of excellence across the country. Currently, we have acquired modern welding and fabrication equipment worth 1.773 billion Tanzanian shillings,” Kasore added.

In line with its plans to enhance global cooperation, Kasore outlined that VETA is strengthening partnerships with training institutions abroad and development partners. This collaboration aims to facilitate experience exchange, enhance instructor capacity, acquire modern training tools, and develop cutting-edge teaching and learning methods.

“Among the countries we are collaborating with are China, the United Kingdom, South Korea, India, Scotland, and Germany. Our development partners include GIZ, Koica, the World Bank, and UNESCO,” Kasore noted.

Additionally, VETA has launched a joint initiative with skilled artisans to provide training and engage in production activities. Under this program, students will also be allocated time to receive mentorship from these artisans during their practical training.

Kasore explained that artisans would benefit from advanced skills training through VETA's workshops, with opportunities to formalize their expertise through certification. Artisans will also be able to teach at VETA institutions and participate in the assessment of practical training sessions.

VETA is collaborating with over 100 companies and employers to offer students practical training at workplace sites. The authority has also conducted a skills needs assessment across the country’s regions and districts to ensure that the skills being taught are aligned with economic and social demands.

Kasore reaffirmed that VETA would continue these assessments to ensure that vocational training institutions across all regions are meeting the country's evolving skill requirements.
