Strategic Minerals-Rich Regions in Tanzania to Undergo Comprehensive Survey

 Arusha | March 23, 2025

The Tanzanian government has announced a major initiative to accelerate detailed geological research in regions rich in strategic minerals, with a target of achieving 50% exploration coverage by 2030.

Deputy Minister of Minerals, Dr. Steven Kiruswa, stated that the ministry's institutions will intensify their efforts in mineral-rich zones, focusing on expedited and thorough surveys to unlock economic potential. This forms part of the broader Vision 2030 roadmap under the theme “Minerals are Life and Wealth,” which aims to elevate the current exploration coverage from 16% to 50% within the next five years.

Speaking in Arusha during the official opening of the Workers’ Council meeting for the Ministry of Minerals, Dr. Kiruswa emphasized that enhanced mineral surveys will lead to increased government revenue and open up new economic opportunities—especially for young artisanal miners seeking financial empowerment through the mining sector.

“A comprehensive mineral survey will not only boost state revenue but will also transform the livelihoods of youth involved in mining by expanding their opportunities within this sector,” said Dr. Kiruswa.

Also addressing the gathering, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Minerals, Msafiri Mbibo, highlighted the ministry’s progress from July 2024 to February 2025. He noted significant achievements, particularly the improved contribution of the mining sector to the national GDP, which rose to 9.0% in 2023. Additionally, the sector's growth rate reached an impressive 11.3% during the same period.

These developments underscore the ministry's commitment to fostering sustainable growth in the mining sector while ensuring it remains a vital pillar of Tanzania’s economic future.
