Former Moshi MP Laid to Rest as Family Mourns a Dedicated Leader
Moshi, Tanzania – March 12, 2025
Hundreds of mourners gathered today to bid farewell to John Mwanga, the first-ever Member of Parliament (MP) for Moshi Urban under the ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM). The 78-year-old former lawmaker, who served from 1990 to 1995, passed away on March 4, 2025, while receiving treatment at Selian Mission Hospital in Arusha.
His burial took place at the family cemetery in Sisamaro Village, Okaoni Ward, Moshi District, Kilimanjaro Region, where relatives, friends, political figures, and community members paid their final respects.
Health Struggles and Final Days
Speaking on behalf of the family, Imani Mwanga, the late MP’s son, revealed that his father battled hypertension and diabetes for years. In 2023 and again in 2024, Mwanga faced heart complications that led to major surgery at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) in Dar es Salaam. Despite a successful operation and continued medical care, he later underwent another major surgical procedure on his leg.
His condition deteriorated on February 27, 2025, prompting an emergency admission to Selian Mission Hospital, where he remained under medical attention until his passing on March 4, 2025.
A Leader Remembered
Mwanga is survived by nine children, 30 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. His children described him as a pillar of strength, a dedicated leader, and a family-oriented individual whose impact extended beyond politics.
“We are grateful to God for blessing us with such an exceptional father,” said Imani Mwanga. “His qualities are countless, and we will strive to uphold the values he instilled in us.”
Religious Tribute and Community Farewell
During the burial service, Father Evarist Kawau, the parish priest of St. Francis Xavier Parish, urged mourners to embrace faith during the Lenten season and pray for the departed.
“Let us continue to pray for his eternal rest, trusting that we shall meet him again in the heavenly kingdom,” said Father Kawau.
Political Legacy and National Impact
Representing Moshi Urban MP Priscus Tarimo, Said Mndeme, the legislator’s secretary, emphasized Mwanga’s pivotal role in Tanzania’s democratic transition.
“He was among the parliamentarians who pushed for constitutional reforms, paving the way for the introduction of multi-party democracy in Tanzania,” Mndeme stated. “His contribution to governance and political evolution remains a significant part of our national history.”
A Final Goodbye
As the funeral procession concluded, family members, close relatives, and community leaders expressed deep sorrow but vowed to cherish the late MP’s legacy. His widow and children stood solemnly by his coffin, honoring his journey as a devoted public servant, father, and reformist.
Mwanga’s passing marks the end of an era, but his influence in politics, community service, and family life will continue to be remembered for generations.
