Remains of Fuel Tanker Driver Identified After Fatal Collision in Morogoro
Morogoro, March 5, 2025 – The remains of the fuel tanker driver involved in the fiery crash between two trucks in Msamvu, Morogoro, have been identified following forensic analysis. The tragic incident, which occurred on March 4, 2025, on the Morogoro-Dar es Salaam highway, led to the deaths of three people.
Dr. Daniel Nkungu, the Chief Medical Officer at Morogoro Regional Referral Hospital, confirmed that one of the bodies has been identified. The remains belong to Majaliwa Chunga, a 54-year-old resident of Ruaha in the Iringa region, who was the driver of the fuel tanker. The other two bodies are still being stored at the hospital, awaiting identification.
Dr. Nkungu emphasized that due to the severe nature of the crash, the bodies were too badly disfigured to be recognized by sight alone. Consequently, the hospital, in collaboration with the police, collected samples and sent them to the forensic lab for analysis.
“The bodies were in a state that made visual identification impossible. As such, we had to work closely with the police to send samples to the forensic experts,” Dr. Nkungu explained.
Families who believe their relatives may have been involved in the crash are being urged to follow the proper procedures to identify the bodies. They must first contact the police for guidance on the process of recognizing and reclaiming the remains.
“We will continue to treat the bodies with the utmost respect and dignity until they are properly identified,” Dr. Nkungu added.
In a public statement, Dr. Nkungu also advised concerned family members to visit the Morogoro regional police station, where they can receive instructions on how to proceed with identifying the bodies.
The collision occurred in the early hours of March 4, 2025, near the Nane Nane area along the Morogoro-Dar es Salaam road. It involved a fuel tanker and a cargo truck, which collided head-on before both vehicles were engulfed in flames.
Senior Assistant Police Commissioner Linus Mnyambwa confirmed that the cause of the crash was the reckless driving of the cargo truck driver, who failed to observe traffic regulations when attempting to overtake another vehicle, leading to the fatal collision.
At the accident scene, Commissioner Mnyambwa urged all drivers to adhere to road safety laws to prevent accidents caused by negligence.
