Mbeya, March 10, 2025 – Mbeya City delivered a dominant performance at Sokoine Stadium, securing a decisive 3-0 victory over Songea United and intensifying the battle for promotion in the Championship League.
The home side asserted their dominance early, with Adili Buha opening the scoring in just the 5th minute. Their lead doubled in the 16th minute thanks to Willy Mgaya, before Riphat Msuya sealed the win with a well-placed strike in the 76th minute.
Promotion Standings: Mbeya City Moves Up
With this crucial win, Mbeya City climbed to second place, tied with Stand United at 46 points from 22 games. However, they hold the advantage on goal difference. Both teams continue to chase league leaders Mtibwa Sugar, who currently sit eight points ahead with 54 points.
The promotion race remains fiercely competitive, with Geita Gold in fourth place with 45 points, closely followed by TMA (41), Mbeya Kwanza (39), and Bigman (37).
Under the current format, the top two teams will earn automatic promotion to the Premier League, while the third and fourth-placed teams must compete in a playoff, making every match increasingly significant.
Relegation Battle: Teams Fight for Survival
At the lower end of the table, Polisi Tanzania (27 points) and Mbuni (26 points) remain just outside the relegation zone but are far from safe. Meanwhile, Green Warriors (20), Kiluvya (19), Cosmopolitan (15), and African Sports (14) all risk slipping further down.
The real struggle lies at the bottom, where Transit Camp (11 points) and Biashara United (4 points) face the grim prospect of relegation. With only eight games left, Biashara United requires a minimum of 13 points from their remaining fixtures to stand a chance of survival, while Transit Camp also needs a dramatic turnaround.
