Man Rescued After Being Swept Away by Floodwaters in Morogoro

March 12, 2025

A dramatic rescue unfolded in Morogoro after a man was swept away by floodwaters and found trapped in a drainage culvert. The incident occurred on the night of March 11 in Mkundi, within Morogoro Municipality, following heavy rainfall that persisted from Tuesday evening into the early hours of Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

According to the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA), the rains, which have affected various regions across the country, had been anticipated, with warnings issued about the potential for heavy downpours.

Incident Overview

Speaking on Wednesday morning, Morogoro Regional Fire and Rescue Commander, Shabani Marugujo, confirmed that the unidentified man, a resident of Mkundi, was attempting to cross a water passage when he lost his footing and was swept away by the strong currents. He was later discovered trapped in a culvert, where he was successfully rescued.

"The man was crossing an area where water was flowing rapidly. He slipped and was carried away by the floodwaters. Upon receiving reports, we tracked the water's path and were able to locate him trapped in a culvert," said Commander Marugujo.

Fortunately, the man did not suffer serious injuries apart from exhaustion caused by the ordeal. After being rescued, his relatives arrived at the scene and took him home.

No Major Damages Reported So Far

Commander Marugujo noted that, as of now, no significant damages or casualties have been reported in other districts of Morogoro, despite ongoing rainfall. However, he cautioned that with the ground already saturated, additional rainfall could pose risks.

"These are the first rains after a period of intense heat, so the immediate impact may not be severe. However, if the rains persist, there is a likelihood of flooding and other hazards," he stated.

The TMA has indicated that Morogoro is among the regions expected to experience significant rainfall in the coming days. Residents have been urged to exercise caution, especially those living in flood-prone areas such as riverbanks, lowlands, and near ponds.

Authorities Urge Public Vigilance

Commander Marugujo emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures and advised residents to dial emergency number 114 if they encounter disasters related to the ongoing heavy rains. He also urged people to avoid seeking shelter under trees or near walls, as the storms have been accompanied by strong winds.

Meanwhile, in Lukobe, one of the areas affected by the heavy rains, resident Joseph Mgabo described the intensity of the storm, which began at approximately 6 PM.

"While I was engaged in my business activities, strong winds accompanied by thunder and lightning struck. Suddenly, I heard a clattering sound on the rooftops, and when I stepped outside, I saw small ice pellets falling from the sky," Mgabo recalled.

The hailstorm was brief, after which the rain continued in a more typical manner.

TMA Forecast and Advisory

On Tuesday, March 11, 2025, the TMA issued a weather alert, forecasting heavy rainfall in several regions, particularly in Southern Coastal areas, including Lindi and Mtwara. Other regions such as Rukwa, Mbeya, Iringa, Songwe, and Njombe were also expected to experience substantial precipitation.

Additionally, Dar es Salaam, Pwani, Ruvuma, and Morogoro were highlighted as areas likely to receive considerable rainfall, a prediction that largely materialized.

For today, the TMA has forecast the possibility of rain in Arusha, Manyara, Kilimanjaro, Lindi, and Mtwara, urging residents to remain cautious and prepared for potential weather-related hazards.
