Iran Summons Swiss Envoy Over Trump's Nuclear Threats
Iran has summoned the senior Swiss diplomat in Tehran, who represents U.S. interests in the country, in response to renewed threats from former U.S. President Donald Trump over Iran’s nuclear program.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei stated via Twitter that Western countries, led by the United States, are unjustly accusing Iran of seeking nuclear weapons. Tehran has repeatedly denied these allegations, maintaining that its nuclear program is strictly for civilian purposes, particularly within the energy sector.
The Swiss Embassy in Tehran has served as a critical communication channel between Washington and Tehran since the severing of diplomatic ties in 1980.
Tensions escalated further after Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, issued a stark warning during his Eid al-Fitr address on Monday. Without naming Trump directly, Khamenei warned that any attack on Iran would provoke a strong and resolute response.
“They threaten us with harm... but if such a thing happens, Iran will undoubtedly deliver a ‘decisive response,’” Khamenei declared.
The warning followed Trump’s comments in a Saturday interview, in which he said Iran would be bombed if it did not agree to a nuclear deal. Speaking to NBC News, Trump warned, “If they don’t make a deal, there will be an explosion,” and further threatened unspecified “second-level tariffs” on Iran.
On Sunday, Trump reiterated his warning, stating that Iran would face bombing unless it accepted the terms outlined in a letter he reportedly sent to Iranian leadership earlier in March, giving Tehran a two-month deadline to respond.
These remarks mark a sharp escalation in rhetoric as Trump continues to press for a revised nuclear agreement. The threats revive memories of the 2018 U.S. withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the landmark nuclear deal brokered under President Barack Obama.
