Tanzania Men's Association Launches Beekeeping Project with 130 Modern Hives

DODOMA, April 2, 2025 – The Tanzania Elderly Men’s Association in Dodoma Region (CCWWT) has expressed its gratitude to the government for sponsoring 130 beehives valued at TZS 16.5 million, aimed at supporting community-based beekeeping initiatives.

The association also extended its appreciation to the Wami Ruvu Basin Water Board for partnering with the government to allocate 1,500 acres of land in Makutupora and Mzakwe for the installation of the hives.

Speaking at the official launch of the beekeeping project at the Makutupora-Mzakwe basin in Dodoma, the association’s secretary, George Andalla, noted that the support will significantly improve the economic conditions of elderly men in the region.

“This assistance is a lifeline that will economically empower our members, reduce dependency, and enable them to generate self-sustaining income through employment creation,” said Andalla.

He further emphasized that the initiative will not only benefit the elderly but also serve as an opportunity for youth employment. Many young people currently unemployed or vulnerable to social vices are expected to turn their lives around by joining the project.

While acknowledging the contribution of the government and stakeholders, Andalla called for further support, requesting an additional 5,000 hectares of land. The land would be used to expand into agriculture, specifically for grape cultivation, sunflowers, millet, sesame, vegetables, fruits, and other crops.

Ntemo Athumani, the association’s spokesperson, and Omary Ndubonguru, a member of the Elders’ Council, echoed the call for increased support from donors. They stressed the need to empower elderly members through sustainable projects, moving them away from reliance on begging.

“Our association includes skilled professionals and retired experts from various fields. With proper support, they can contribute meaningfully to national economic growth through well-managed community projects,” said the elders.
