Mwakinyo Held by Police in Tanga Over Alleged Assault

Hassan Mwakinyo, the renowned professional boxer and WBO Africa Middleweight champion, is currently in police custody in Tanga, facing allegations of assault. The incident stems from an alleged altercation with an individual who reportedly attempted to enter his property without permission.

The boxer has been detained since Thursday at the Chumbageni Police Station. Meanwhile, the alleged victim of the attack is receiving treatment at the Bombo Referral Hospital in Tanga for injuries sustained during the incident.

A reliable source informed Mwananchi that the primary reason for Mwakinyo's detention is his involvement in the assault, which resulted in significant injuries to the victim.

Maket Msangi, the Acting Police Commander of Tanga Region, confirmed that the police are holding Mwakinyo, clarifying that the charge is not specifically related to his profession as a boxer. Msangi explained that the boxer is accused of assaulting the individual, who was allegedly attempting to enter his home under suspicious circumstances. The victim suffered injuries during the confrontation, prompting police intervention.

Msangi further elaborated, stating, "At the time of the report, the victim had already been apprehended by Mwakinyo. When we arrived to take him into custody, the suspect was slightly injured. We took him to receive first aid at the Bombo hospital. We are continuing to question Mwakinyo about the incident, specifically why the individual was injured in such a manner."

The police official emphasized that Mwakinyo's detention is a direct result of the victim's injuries. "We are investigating further, and if the evidence supports the allegations, appropriate legal actions will be taken, and the case will be forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for further interpretation and action," added Msangi.
