Ukraine Agrees to 30-Day Ceasefire Proposal Amid Peace Talks
Ukraine has expressed its readiness to accept a 30-day ceasefire with Russia, following a proposal put forward by the United States during diplomatic talks held in Saudi Arabia. The announcement was made by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio after a day of discussions between U.S. and Ukrainian officials in Jeddah.
Rubio confirmed that the proposal would now be presented to Russia, stating, "The ball is now in Russia’s court," indicating that the next move depends on Moscow’s decision to accept or reject the ceasefire plan.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the importance of U.S. efforts in persuading Russia to agree to what he described as a “positive step” towards peace.
Tuesday’s negotiations in Jeddah marked the first formal dialogue between the two nations since the unexpected diplomatic tensions that arose following an unusual exchange between Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.
In a joint statement, the United States also confirmed that it would immediately reinstate intelligence and security assistance for Ukraine—aid that Washington had previously suspended following the high-profile meeting.
Speaking at a press conference in Jeddah late Tuesday, Rubio expressed hope that Russia would respond positively to the ceasefire proposal, signaling a potential step towards de-escalation in the ongoing conflict.
