Tanzania Allocates Sh8 Billion to Boost Cashew Production Under BBT Program
MTWARA, March 10, 2025 – The Tanzanian government has allocated over Sh8 billion to the Cashew Board of Tanzania (CBT) as part of the Jenga Kesho Iliyo Bora (BBT) initiative aimed at enhancing cashew production.
Speaking at a handover ceremony for motorcycles and tablets to agricultural extension officers in Mtwara, CBT Director Francis Alfred confirmed that the funds have facilitated the recruitment of 500 young agricultural officers to support cashew farmers with modern farming techniques to improve productivity.
“The BBT program for cashew production will require more than Sh8 billion, which has been provided by the government to implement this plan over a one-year period,” Alfred stated.
He highlighted that 245 agricultural officers were equipped with motorcycles and digital devices to facilitate their work in providing essential farming advisory services across Mtwara.
To bolster cashew output, the government has deployed the 500 BBT officers across Mtwara, Lindi, Ruvuma, Pwani, and Tanga. The initiative aims to increase cashew nut production to 700,000 metric tonnes in the 2025/2026 season, a significant rise from the 528,262.23 metric tonnes produced in 2024/2025.
