Police Explain Reasons for Continuing to Detain Boxer Hassan Mwakinyo

Tanga, March 10, 2025 – The Tanga Regional Police Force has provided an official explanation for the continued detention of renowned boxer Hassan Mwakinyo (29), who is accused of assaulting Mussa Ally, a local resident, on allegations of theft.

According to the Tanga Regional Police Commander, Almachius Mchunguzi, Mwakinyo allegedly attacked and injured Mussa Ally, a fisherman, after suspecting him of being a thief when he passed near his residence in the Sahare area. As a result of the assault, Mussa Ally was hospitalized at Bombo Regional Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

Speaking to journalists on Monday, March 10, 2025, Commander Mchunguzi confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing, and legal action will be taken once the probe is complete.

"We are holding Sahare resident Hassan Mwakinyo on charges of assaulting and injuring Mussa Ally. The investigation is in progress, and once concluded, the suspect will be taken to court," said Commander Mchunguzi.

He also urged the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, emphasizing that such actions are criminal offenses.

"We urge citizens to continue working with law enforcement by reporting crimes and criminals. Taking the law into one’s own hands can have serious consequences and is against the law," he added.

During police questioning, Mwakinyo reportedly claimed that he mistook Mussa Ally for a thief, which led to the March 4, 2025, altercation at his residence in the Sahare area.

The police have assured the public that they will issue an official statement on the case's outcome once the investigation is complete.
