In a dramatic finish to the Mzizima Derby, Azam’s Zidane Sereri scored a late equalizer in the dying seconds of the match to salvage a 2-2 draw against Simba, leaving the latter's fans stunned as they neared a 17th victory in the Tanzanian Premier League.
Simba appeared to be on the brink of celebrating a crucial three points after leading 2-1 with just a few minutes remaining. However, Zidane, who had come on as a substitute for Idd Seleman 'Nado', delivered a well-timed strike in the 88th minute, a mere two minutes before the final whistle. His goal left Simba's defense and goalkeeper, Moussa Camara, helpless, as he slotted the ball past them into the net in front of a packed Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
This thrilling encounter, which saw both teams battle fiercely throughout the 90 minutes, ended with a share of the spoils. The draw helped lift the spirits of Yanga, the league leaders, who would likely have been celebrating their extended advantage at the top.
Simba, who are now on 51 points from 20 matches, could only rue missed opportunities, while Azam's 44 points from 21 games kept them in contention. The result further cemented Yanga's position at the summit, with 55 points from 21 matches.
In the 34th Mzizima Derby since 2008, the match delivered an entertaining spectacle, as both teams showcased skillful play and determined rivalry. The central midfield battle was pivotal, and the fans in attendance were treated to a highly competitive affair, with both teams striving to outdo each other.
Notably, this draw marked Simba’s third draw of the season and Azam’s fifth, while Camara’s remarkable clean sheet streak was finally ended, leaving him with 15 matches without conceding.
Azam's Early Advantage
The match started with Azam making an early statement. Just one minute into the game, Djibril Sillah gave the visitors the lead after a quick counterattack. Sillah initially had his shot saved by Camara, but the ball fell back to him, and he made no mistake in finishing. This early goal set the tone for a high-paced and intense encounter.
Simba quickly responded, with Ellie Mpanzu causing significant trouble for Azam’s defense. Mpanzu's efforts were complemented by Kibu Denis, whose pace kept Azam's defenders on edge. The two combined beautifully in the 24th minute to equalize. Mpanzu expertly finished with his right foot after a brilliant pass from Kibu, leveling the score at 1-1.
Ahoua's Contribution
The second half saw Simba take the lead in the 76th minute. A well-executed header from defender Abdulrazack Hamza, who capitalized on a free kick from Jean Charles Ahoua, gave Simba a 2-1 advantage. Ahoua's assist marked his sixth of the season, adding to his impressive tally of 10 goals.
However, Azam had the last word. Sillah made way for Zidane Sereri, who would go on to become the hero of the match. Zidane made an immediate impact, scoring a vital goal in the 88th minute after meeting a long cross from Feisal Salum ‘Fei Toto’. His precise header left Simba's defense frustrated as they saw their victory slip away in the final moments.
This result brings the total number of draws between the two sides to seven, with Simba winning six and Azam winning just one of their previous 14 encounters.
