Tanzanian Referees to Undergo VAR Training in March

Refresher Course on VAR for Top Tanzanian Referees
March 02, 2025

A five-day training course aimed at enhancing the performance of Tanzania’s top football referees will begin tomorrow, Monday, and run through to Friday. The course will take place at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, with a focus on improving their understanding and use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology.

The training will feature 20 referees, including prominent figures such as Ahmed Arajiga, Herry Sasii, Ramadhani Kayoko, and Tatu Malogo, who will undergo intensive sessions to strengthen their VAR skills.

This initiative comes at a crucial time, just days before the highly anticipated derby match between Simba and Yanga, two of the country’s biggest football clubs. The match, set to take place shortly after the course concludes, will be one of the key events where the application of VAR will be tested in real-time during a high-pressure game.

According to a list released by the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), other referees joining the course include Amina Kyando, Nasir Siyah, Mohamed Simba, Alex Pangars, Abdallah Mwinyimkuu, Esther Adabert, Frank Komba, Kassim Seif, Ally Ramadhan, Hamdani Said, Mohamed Mkono, Janeth Balama, Glory Tesha, Zawadi Yussuph, Siraji Mkwaju, and Shaban Mussa.

This course follows a series of recurring referee errors observed throughout the current season, prompting the TFF to take proactive measures. VAR, which was introduced earlier this season, is now being actively used to ensure fairer decisions during matches. The TFF had previously announced that VAR equipment would be implemented, with referees receiving training on how to effectively use this advanced technology.
