Mabruki Doyi Moke: Former Simba and Yanga Goalkeeper Killed in DRC
In a tragic incident that has left the Tanzanian football community in shock, Mabruki Doyi Moke, a former goalkeeper for both Simba and Yanga, was killed in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), on the morning of March 6, 2025. Moke, who lived in the bustling Kariakoo area of Dar es Salaam from 1999 to 2003, was reportedly burned to death by local residents who mistook him for a criminal.
The incident occurred in Bukavu, where vigilante justice has become increasingly common. This form of retribution has escalated in recent months, largely due to the release of prisoners by the M23 rebel group after seizing the region. The released inmates, now roaming the streets as criminals, have contributed to a surge in crime. As a result, residents have taken matters into their own hands, capturing and executing those they believe to be criminals. Tragically, Moke, a former footballer with no connection to any wrongdoing, became a victim of this dangerous trend.
The Life of Mabruki Doyi Moke
Mabruki Doyi Moke’s football career began in Tanzania in 1997 when he joined Majimaji FC of Songea. The late Anna Makinda, the then Regional Commissioner of Ruvuma, spearheaded efforts to strengthen the Majimaji squad, bringing in the talented Burundian coach Nzoyisaba Tauzany and several notable players, including Godfrey Kikumbizi and Willy Martin. Moke was signed for a reported sum of Sh700,000, which helped bolster Majimaji’s success. In 1998, the team won the prestigious Ligi Kuu ya Muungano and represented the region in the African Champions League.
In 1999, Moke made a notable switch to Simba, alongside his teammates Steven Mapunda (known as "Garrincha") and Amri Said ("Stam"). Moke played with Simba until 2000 before joining Yanga in 2001, where he played until 2003, before transferring to Burundi’s Vital'O FC.
Moke’s Time at Simba
Moke’s tenure at Simba was marked by notable performances, but he was perhaps most famously remembered for a controversial incident during the derby match on August 5, 2000. In that game, Yanga's Idd Moshi ("Mnyamwezi"), who had just married, scored twice to secure a 2-0 victory for his team. Moke, playing in goal for Simba, was blamed by some for the defeat, with claims that his poor performance was tied to his demands for payment. This match remains one of the most iconic moments in Tanzanian football history.
At Yanga
During his time at Yanga, Moke was an integral part of the squad, playing in key African Champions League matches. Under coach Charles Boniface Mkwassa, Yanga achieved memorable successes, including an impressive victory over Zimbabwe’s Highlanders in the 2001 African Champions League. The first leg in Dar es Salaam ended in a 2-2 draw, but Yanga won the return leg 2-0, despite a chaotic pitch invasion by Highlanders fans protesting a controversial penalty decision. Moke stood firm in goal during these critical matches, helping his team reach the next stages of the tournament.
Moke’s legacy lives on in Tanzanian football, as he was a central figure in the fierce rivalry between Simba and Yanga, embodying the passion and dedication of the players during one of the most exciting football eras in the country.
A Community in Grief
The tragic end to Moke’s life has not only shocked his family, friends, and former teammates but also the broader football community in Tanzania, where he was a beloved figure. His death serves as a somber reminder of the ongoing challenges in conflict-affected regions like Bukavu, where crime and vigilante justice continue to rise. As authorities investigate the incident, the football world mourns the loss of one of its brightest stars, whose passion for the game touched the hearts of many.
