Vice President Dr. Mpango to Officiate National Torch Race Launch
Kibaha – March 26, 2025
Tanzania’s Vice President, Dr. Philip Mpango, is set to be the guest of honour at the official launch of the national Mwenge wa Uhuru (Torch of Freedom) race, scheduled to take place on April 2 at the Kibaha Education Corporation grounds in Coast Region.
This announcement was made by the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Youth, Employment and Persons with Disabilities), Ridhiwani Kikwete, during an inspection visit to assess preparations for the upcoming event. According to Kikwete, more than 90 percent of the preparations have been successfully completed.
Following the launch, Vice President Mpango will formally hand over the torch to six designated leaders—selected from both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar—who will spearhead the 195-day journey through all 31 regions of the country, covering a total of 195 district councils.
Minister Kikwete highlighted that the 2025 torch run will focus on promoting peace, unity, love, and national solidarity. Additionally, it aims to encourage citizens to actively engage in socio-economic development activities within their communities.
The central theme of this year’s Mwenge wa Uhuru is:
“Jitokeze kushiriki uchaguzi mkuu wa mwaka 2025 kwa amani na utulivu,”
translated as “Come forward to participate in the 2025 general election in peace and tranquility.”
The message seeks to educate and remind all Tanzanians of the importance of participating peacefully and responsibly in the upcoming national elections.
Furthermore, the campaign will also raise public awareness on key health and social issues, including the fight against HIV/AIDS, malaria, drug abuse, and corruption.
Minister Kikwete urged residents of Coast Region and neighboring areas to turn out in large numbers to witness and support the national event.
