A tragic incident has claimed the life of a nine-year-old pupil from Kakoyoyo Primary School in Bukombe District, Geita Region, after he was struck by lightning during a heavy downpour.
Geita Regional Acting Police Commander, Adamu Maro, confirmed the incident to journalists, stating that the tragedy occurred on March 23 in Kakoyoyo village.
According to Commander Maro, the victim, identified as Ibrahim Masumbuko, was out in the rice fields hunting birds with his siblings when a sudden storm struck. A powerful thunderstorm accompanied by strong winds and lightning hit the area, injuring two other children from the same family—Kulwa Masumbuko, 11, a Standard Three pupil, and Isaka Masumbuko, aged three.
“At the time of the incident, the children were in the rice fields chasing birds. As the storm intensified, they attempted to flee back home, but were struck by lightning along the way,” Maro explained.
He noted that the body of the deceased was examined and later released to the family for burial. The injured children received treatment at Bulega Health Centre and were discharged after their condition stabilized.
The police have issued a public advisory urging residents to remain vigilant during the rainy season to avoid preventable tragedies caused by extreme weather events.
"We continue to educate the public on lightning safety measures, including the importance of avoiding open spaces and areas with dense tree cover during storms," added Commander Maro.
