Kenyan Officer Killed in Security Operation in Haiti
A Kenyan police officer was tragically killed on Sunday during a security operation aimed at tackling gang violence in Haiti. The officer was part of a larger contingent of over 600 Kenyan personnel who have been stationed in Haiti since June 2024, working under the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS).
Force Commander Godfrey Otunge confirmed the officer's death in a statement posted on social media, though he did not provide specific details of the incident.
The statement read, "Today, Sunday, February 23, 2025, one of our MSS officers from the Kenyan contingent was injured during an operation in SEGUR SAVIEN, in the Artibonite department. The officer was immediately airlifted to Aspen Level 2 Hospital but, unfortunately, succumbed to the injuries."
It later emerged that the residents of Seguin in Pont-Sonde had requested that the Kenyan officers conduct operations in the area, after several days of security operations in Artibonite that resulted in the deaths of multiple gang members.
Responding to the call from local residents, Kenyan officers, together with the Haiti National Police (HNP), swiftly mobilized to carry out operations. "This is the price our courageous officer paid—he was killed while fighting for the people of Haiti. His fellow officers, unwilling to accept the loss, immediately pursued and neutralized the gang member responsible," a follow-up statement read.
The death highlights the ongoing and perilous nature of the security operations in Haiti, where gang violence continues to pose a serious threat to the stability of the country.
