BASATA Praises Efforts to Promote Taarab Music in Tanzania
DAR ES SALAAM, March 8, 2025 – The National Arts Council of Tanzania (BASATA) has praised the Tanzania Taarab Music Association for its unwavering dedication to promoting and advancing the Taarab music genre within the country.
Edward Buganga, BASATA’s Director of Arts Development and Promotion, made the commendation following a recent meeting at the council's headquarters. During his remarks, Buganga highlighted the significant contributions made by Taarab musicians in both preserving and modernizing the genre, ensuring its continued relevance for future generations.
In his address, Buganga emphasized that Taarab music is a cornerstone of Tanzania’s cultural heritage. He acknowledged its ongoing evolution while stressing the importance of maintaining its traditional core. Buganga further pointed out that Taarab music is much more than mere entertainment – it is a profound reflection of the nation's rich history, values, and culture.
“We, at BASATA, deeply appreciate the tireless efforts of Taarab artists,” Buganga noted. “We are committed to supporting your growth through policies, programs, and initiatives that foster the promotion of this exceptional art form. It is our duty to create a nurturing environment where musicians can thrive, showcase their talents, and contribute to the overall development of the creative industry.”
Buganga also called on industry stakeholders to support Taarab musicians by offering more opportunities for performances, organizing capacity-building initiatives, and leveraging digital platforms to broaden their audience reach.
“The ever-evolving dynamics of the music industry, incorporating modern production methods and marketing strategies, will play a pivotal role in elevating Taarab music to new heights,” he said.
Taarab music, which blends Swahili poetic lyrics with melodies influenced by the Arab world and the Indian Ocean region, remains one of Tanzania’s most cherished art forms. The genre has played a crucial role in shaping the country's musical identity, and the ongoing efforts to support its growth continue to gain momentum.
