TRC Successfully Tests 264 Freight Wagons for SGR Operations
DAR ES SALAAM – The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has successfully completed testing 264 Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) freight wagons, marking a crucial step toward launching freight services on the modern railway system.
The wagons, which arrived in Tanzania in December 2024, underwent rigorous testing under the supervision of the Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA). The evaluation process included comprehensive stability tests—both in stationary and operational conditions—to ensure their structural integrity and the functionality of key systems, such as braking on curved tracks.
Of the 264 wagons assessed, 200 are specifically designed for container transport, while the remaining 64 will handle loose cargo. According to LATRA, the wagons have met all required safety and operational standards, boasting a maximum speed capacity of 120 kilometers per hour.
The next phase in the process involves LATRA officially certifying the wagons, a regulatory requirement that will grant TRC authorization to commence freight operations.
Part of a Larger Modernization Effort
These wagons are part of a larger consignment of 1,430 units being manufactured by the Chinese company CRRC. The procurement is a key component of Tanzania's strategic initiative to modernize its freight transport sector and enhance logistical efficiency through the SGR network.
The successful completion of the testing phase represents a significant milestone in Tanzania’s railway expansion. The introduction of these high-capacity wagons is expected to improve cargo transport efficiency, reduce reliance on road networks, and strengthen trade within the country and across the region.
With faster and more reliable freight movement, TRC anticipates that the new wagons will play a pivotal role in boosting economic growth and facilitating regional commerce.
