Tanzania has bid a solemn farewell to retired government leader, Professor Philemon Sarungi, who was laid to rest in Dar es Salaam following a heartfelt funeral service.
The service, held at Karimjee Grounds before his burial at Kinondoni Cemetery, was attended by prominent leaders, colleagues, and citizens who paid their last respects to the revered statesman.
Representing President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the service was Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office for Youth, Labor, Employment, and People with Disabilities, Ridhiwani Kikwete. Speaking on behalf of the President, Kikwete honored Professor Sarungi as a man of unwavering principles, a revolutionary figure, and a unifying force who will be fondly remembered.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan was unable to attend the ceremony due to her commitment to a Central Committee meeting of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) in Dodoma.
A Legacy of Integrity and Commitment
Former Prime Minister Joseph Warioba paid tribute to Professor Sarungi, describing him as a dedicated patriot who upheld the highest ethical standards throughout his service. Warioba emphasized that Sarungi’s integrity, honesty, and unwavering commitment to the nation set an example for future generations.
Adding to the tributes, Musoma Rural MP, Professor Sospeter Muhongo, recalled his many intellectual discussions with Sarungi on education, ethnic identity, and politics. He revealed that Sarungi had once shared with him the challenges he faced when entering politics, admitting that he had not grown up in a politically driven environment.
Champion of Healthcare and Education
Professor Muhongo also highlighted Professor Sarungi’s immense contributions to Tanzania’s healthcare sector, particularly in the establishment of the Muhimbili Orthopedic Institute (MOI). He urged authorities to preserve Sarungi’s legacy, ensuring that his name remains synonymous with the institution he helped build.
Beyond healthcare, Sarungi’s commitment to education was evident in his support for secondary education in his home region, where he had personally invested in improving learning facilities.
As the nation mourns his passing, Professor Sarungi’s contributions to medicine, governance, and national unity remain an enduring testament to his remarkable legacy.
