British Ultramarathon Runner Takes on 3,000km New Zealand Challenge
Russ Cook, a British endurance runner renowned for his record-breaking journey across Africa, has embarked on a new challenge: running the full length of New Zealand.
The 27-year-old athlete, famously known as "Hardest Geezer," completed his monumental Africa run in April last year after an astonishing 352 days of relentless effort. Now, he has set his sights on conquering the Te Araroa Trail, a grueling 3,000-kilometer (1,864-mile) route stretching from the southernmost tip of New Zealand’s South Island to the northernmost point of the North Island.
Cook’s latest endeavor will see him running the equivalent of 60 ultramarathons, traversing mountainous terrain, dense forests, coastal paths, and urban landscapes. Starting from Stirling Point in the south, he aims to reach Cape Rēinga in Northland within approximately 60 days.
“The incredible warmth and support I’ve already received have given me a glimpse of how extraordinary this journey will be,” he remarked.
His challenge is not only about endurance but also elevation. Over the next ten weeks, Cook expects to ascend a total altitude equivalent to climbing Mount Everest ten times.
Returning to long-distance running after his African expedition, Cook expressed his excitement about being back on the road.
“If there’s one thing my past experience has taught me, it’s understanding the risks I can and cannot take,” he noted.
With a history of pushing physical and mental boundaries, Cook’s latest mission is set to be another test of sheer determination, resilience, and endurance.
