Death Toll from Myanmar Earthquake Surpasses 1,000
More than 1,000 people have lost their lives in Myanmar following a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake, with thousands more injured as tremors were felt across neighboring countries.
The majority of fatalities have been reported in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city and the closest urban area to the earthquake’s epicenter.
Rescue operations are ongoing both in Myanmar and across the border in Thailand. In Mandalay, teams are working under dire conditions, often using their bare hands to search for survivors trapped under the rubble. "We are digging people out with our hands," a rescue worker told the BBC near the earthquake’s epicenter.
In Bangkok, rescue efforts are focused on a collapsed high-rise construction site. Local authorities confirmed that approximately 100 construction workers remain unaccounted for, while six fatalities have been confirmed so far.
Myanmar’s military government has issued a rare international appeal for assistance—an unusual move by a regime that has remained largely isolated and subject to heavy Western sanctions in recent years.
Ongoing conflict and civil unrest in Myanmar, along with strict control by the military regime, continue to hinder access to accurate information about the true extent of the disaster.
