Mourners Gather at Karimjee Hall to Pay Last Respects to Prof. Philemon Sarungi

Dar es Salaam, March 10, 2025 – A multitude of mourners, including political leaders, medical professionals, and members of the public, have begun arriving at Karimjee Hall in Dar es Salaam to bid farewell to the late Prof. Philemon Sarungi.

The former government minister, seasoned politician, and renowned orthopedic surgeon passed away on March 5, 2025, at the age of 89 due to heart complications, as confirmed by his family. His funeral and burial are scheduled for today, Monday, March 10, 2025.

Distinguished Leaders Among Attendees

A host of high-profile figures have gathered at Karimjee Hall to honor Prof. Sarungi’s legacy. Among the early arrivals are retired government officials and members of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).

Notable dignitaries include:

  • Former Prime Minister Joseph Warioba
  • Joseph Butiku, former secretary to the late President Julius Nyerere
  • Former CCM Secretary-General and Vice Chairman, Abdulrahman Kinana
  • Ambassador Christopher Liundi

From the opposition, Chadema Chairman Tundu Lissu, Deputy Chairman John Heche, and Central Committee member Godbless Lema have arrived to pay their respects. ACT Wazalendo’s former leader, Zitto Kabwe, has also joined the mourners.

Additionally, a delegation of orthopedic doctors, led by the Tanzania Orthopedic Association (TOA), is in attendance, recognizing Prof. Sarungi’s invaluable contributions to the medical field.

Dignitaries and the Public Unite in Tribute

The farewell ceremony has attracted mourners from diverse backgrounds. Among those present is Simba SC Chairman Murtaza Mangungu, alongside several prominent figures from the health and political sectors.

As of 3:52 AM, the highest-ranking government official to arrive was Ilala District Commissioner, Edward Mpogolo. Meanwhile, a choir from the Seventh-day Adventist Church has been singing hymns, adding a solemn yet reverent tone to the proceedings.

A Legacy of Leadership and Service

During his lifetime, Prof. Sarungi held several key positions, including:

  • Minister of Health
  • Minister of Education
  • Minister of Defense and National Service
  • Regional Commissioner

As mourners continue to arrive at Karimjee Hall, the body of Prof. Sarungi is expected to be transported from Lugalo Hospital before the final farewell rites commence.
