Saturday, March 29, 2025

A key stretch of the Himo Junction – Moshi – Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) Highway has been temporarily closed following significant damage caused by a major fresh water pipeline near the Arusha Roundabout.

The Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) in Kilimanjaro Region announced on Friday, March 28, 2025, that this closure is necessary to facilitate urgent repair works.

The damage, reportedly resulting from the pipeline rupture, has compromised road safety and accessibility, prompting authorities to take immediate action to prevent further risk to road users.

In light of the disruption, TANROADS has advised the following alternative routes:

  • Heavy Vehicles (over 10 tonnes): Drivers are urged to use the detour via Lucy Lameck – Ghaha – Viwanda – Manyema – Mafuta – Nyerere – Bonite – Khambaita roads.

  • Light Vehicles: Motorists are recommended to use the YMCA – Kilimanjaro route via Bustani Alley.

The affected road segment is currently undergoing repair work, and images from the site show heavy machinery and personnel actively addressing the situation.

TANROADS has called on all road users to exercise patience and comply with the provided instructions to minimize disruption and ensure public safety during the maintenance period.
