Zitto, Lissu, and Kikwete Attend Funeral of Prof. Sarungi

Dar es Salaam, March 9, 2025 — A gathering of prominent figures attended the mourning ceremony of the late former Minister and academic, Professor Phillemon Sarungi, who passed away on the evening of March 5, 2025, at his Oysterbay residence in Dar es Salaam following heart-related complications.

The somber occasion continued on Sunday, March 9, 2025, with numerous leaders arriving to pay their respects to Professor Sarungi’s widow, Veronica, and the bereaved family members. The funeral ceremony is set for Monday, March 10, 2025.

Lissu, Zitto, and Kikwete's Visits

At 8:30 a.m., Tundu Lissu, the Chairman of the Chadema party, arrived and began by greeting mourners, signing the condolence book, and then meeting with the widow.

Just 10 minutes later, Zitto Kabwe, the former leader of the ACT-Wazalendo party, arrived to sign the book of condolences and express his condolences.

At 9:18 a.m., former President Jakaya Kikwete arrived and proceeded to sign the book before heading inside to meet the widow.

Upon exiting, Kikwete approached Lissu, and the two exchanged greetings, enjoying a brief, lighthearted conversation. Kikwete jokingly commented, "I see you're doing well… you've gained more weight than me," while patting his stomach, causing Lissu and nearby mourners to laugh. Lissu greeted Kikwete with a traditional “Shikamoo,” to which Kikwete responded with “Marahaba,” and the two continued their conversation amicably.

Remembering Professor Sarungi

Lissu took a moment to reflect on the legacy of the late Professor Sarungi, describing him as a figure of great respect due to his distinguished service throughout his life.

“Professor Sarungi was one of our elders, held in high regard. He served as Minister of Health, Education, Sports, and Defense, contributing immensely across various fields. In all his roles, he was free of scandal,” Lissu emphasized.

“He leaves us with his reputation intact. A man of great honor,” Lissu added.

Zitto Kabwe also expressed his grief, recalling how he had formed a close political mentorship with Sarungi when he entered parliament in 2005. "He used to advise me, sharing his wisdom on how to speak effectively, and we would consult regularly," Zitto noted.

“I got to know him in Parliament, not through the media, and he became a political guide to me. The nation has lost a treasure, an academic, a longtime minister, and a man of many accomplishments," he added.

Dr. Mpoki Ulisubisya, the Executive Director of the Muhimbili Orthopedic Institute (MOI), shared how Sarungi made a significant impact on the health sector. He revealed that the idea to establish the MOI was initially conceptualized by Sarungi himself.

Dr. Ulisubisya also recounted their shared experiences, noting, "We both attended Ikizu School, and we both worshipped at the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He and the late Faustine Ndugulile helped us by providing tickets to South Africa."

“Professor Sarungi's contributions to health were enormous, not only in Tanzania but also internationally, particularly in the fields of hip and knee replacement surgeries,” he added.

A Remarkable Career and Legacy

Professor Sarungi, 89, had also served as a Member of Parliament for Rorya. He passed away due to heart complications, and his funeral is scheduled for tomorrow, March 10, 2025, at the Kwa Kondo Cemetery in Kunduchi, Kinondoni District, Dar es Salaam.

The decision to bury him in Dar es Salaam was made after discussions with the family, in accordance with his wishes as stated in his will, according to family spokesperson Martin Sarungi.
