According to a statement issued yesterday by Health Minister Jenista Mhagama, the ministry was alerted to suspected cases and promptly collected samples for laboratory testing.
"The laboratory investigation has confirmed that two individuals have tested positive for the virus responsible for monkeypox. As of now, these are the only two confirmed cases in the country," Minister Mhagama stated.
First Case Involves a Truck Driver from a Neighboring Country
The statement further disclosed that one of the confirmed cases is a truck driver who had traveled from a neighboring country to Dar es Salaam.
On March 7, 2025, the ministry’s disease surveillance system identified suspected cases exhibiting symptoms, including rashes on the face, hands, feet, and other parts of the body. These symptoms were accompanied by fever, headaches, throat sores, and body aches, including muscle and back pain.
Government Measures and Public Advisory
The government has assured the public that it is taking proactive measures to control the spread of the virus. The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the President’s Office - Regional Administration and Local Government (TAMISEMI) and all healthcare facilities, is intensifying monitoring, investigation, and identification efforts to detect any additional cases and provide appropriate medical attention.
"The ministry urges the public to remain vigilant and adhere to preventive measures, as viral diseases have no specific cure," the statement emphasized.
The ministry has advised individuals experiencing monkeypox-like symptoms to seek immediate medical attention at health facilities. Additionally, the public is urged to avoid physical contact, handshakes, hugs, or intimate interactions with individuals displaying symptoms of the disease.

In a related update, the Health Ministry reported that efforts to contain the Marburg virus outbreak remain effective, with no new cases recorded.
