Retired boxing legend and Olympic gold medalist George Foreman has passed away at the age of 76, his family confirmed on Friday, March 21, 2025. The cause of death was not disclosed.
In a heartfelt statement, the Foreman family paid tribute to the late icon, saying:
“Our hearts are broken. A devout preacher, devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and great man, he lived a life of faith, perseverance, and unwavering purpose.”
They further described him as:
“A gentleman, an Olympian, and two-time heavyweight world champion. Deeply respected for his strength in kindness, discipline, and unwavering principles, he fought tirelessly to preserve his good name for his family.”
Born on January 10, 1949, in Texas, USA, Foreman grew up in a challenging environment as one of seven children raised by a single mother in the segregated American South. His early life was marked by turbulence—dropping out of school and getting involved in street gangs—until he found a turning point in boxing.
Foreman's rise to prominence began at just 19 years old when he won the gold medal in boxing at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, a milestone that propelled him into a successful professional career. He started his pro boxing journey with an astonishing 37 consecutive wins.
One of the defining moments of his career came in 1973, when he stunned the boxing world in Kingston, Jamaica, by knocking out Joe Frazier, who had never been defeated before. Foreman floored Frazier six times within the first two rounds, solidifying his reputation as a formidable force in the ring.
Perhaps the most iconic bout of his career was the 1974 "Rumble in the Jungle" held in Kinshasa, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), where he faced the legendary Muhammad Ali. It was in that historic fight that Foreman suffered his first professional loss.
Throughout his career, Foreman competed in 81 professional bouts, winning 76—68 by knockout—and losing only five. His legacy is not only defined by his victories but also by his resilience, character, and the inspiration he provided both inside and outside the ring.
