BRAC Maendeleo Tanzania Invites Applications for Gender Officer Role

BRAC Maendeleo Tanzania is seeking a qualified and dynamic professional to fill the role of Gender Officer under its newly launched Vijana Kilimo Biashara (VKB) project, aimed at transforming the sorghum and sunflower value chains for smallholder farmers in Simiyu Region. This full-time role is based in Maswa, one of the two districts targeted by the initiative, and offers a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully to gender equality in agricultural development.

Operating in Tanzania since 2006, BRAC Maendeleo Tanzania focuses on agriculture, youth and women empowerment, food security, and livelihoods. Its latest venture, the Smallholder Sorghum and Sunflower Development Project—supported by the World Food Programme (WFP)—seeks to empower 15,000 farmers, including youth and women, in the Meatu and Maswa districts.

Role Overview: Gender Officer

The Gender Officer will play a central role in ensuring the integration of gender equity across all facets of the VKB project. The position demands strategic planning, community engagement, and technical support to foster inclusive participation and to empower women and youth in agriculture.

Key Responsibilities

Technical and Implementation Duties:

  • Design and execute a comprehensive gender integration strategy tailored to project goals.

  • Align all activities with gender equity principles, ensuring the inclusion of women and youth farmers.

  • Conduct gender-based analysis (baseline, mid-term, end-line) and assess the capacity-building needs of project teams.

  • Organize gender training sessions for staff, farmer cooperatives, and local stakeholders.

  • Develop and apply gender-sensitive tools and indicators for monitoring and evaluation.

  • Gather and analyze sex-disaggregated data to evaluate project impact on target groups.

  • Collaborate with government entities, local NGOs, and private sector actors to promote gender-equitable practices.

  • Document lessons learned and success stories, and contribute to knowledge sharing with the Communications Team.

Safeguarding Responsibilities:

  • Uphold and promote BRAC’s safeguarding policies, ensuring a secure environment for all, especially women and youth.

  • Lead awareness training on safeguarding, sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA), and create accessible reporting mechanisms.

  • Act as a focal point for safeguarding issues, providing guidance and ensuring incident response procedures are followed.

Qualifications and Experience

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Gender Studies, Agriculture, Social Sciences, or a related field.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Deep understanding of gender dynamics in agriculture and rural livelihoods.

  • Demonstrated expertise in conducting gender training and community outreach.

  • Strong analytical skills, with proficiency in handling gender-disaggregated data.

  • Excellent facilitation, communication, and stakeholder engagement abilities.

Professional Experience:

  • A minimum of 3–5 years in gender mainstreaming roles within agricultural or rural development projects.
