Chelsea Secures Sporting Duo Quenda and Essugo in £62.4M Deal
Chelsea has finalized the signing of Sporting Lisbon midfielders Geovany Quenda and Dario Essugo in a combined transfer deal worth approximately £62.4 million, the Portuguese club has confirmed.
Winger Quenda, 17, will move to Stamford Bridge for a fee that could rise to £44 million, according to Sporting’s official statement. However, he will remain in Lisbon until the end of the 2025-26 season to continue his development. The promising youngster broke into Sporting’s first team this season and made his UEFA Champions League debut in September.
Meanwhile, defensive midfielder Essugo, 20, will join Chelsea this summer following a loan spell at La Liga side Las Palmas. Sporting revealed his transfer fee to be £18.4 million. While the young talent has impressed in Spain, he has also received two red cards in his last four matches.
While Chelsea fans will have to wait to see Quenda in action, Essugo could link up with Enzo Maresca’s squad in time for the FIFA Club World Cup, set to take place in the United States this summer.
The Portuguese duo are the latest additions to Chelsea’s strategy of recruiting top young talents. The club has already confirmed the signings of two other 17-year-old prodigies, Brazilian winger Estevão Willian and Ecuadorian midfielder Kendry Páez, both of whom will officially join the squad in the summer transfer window.
