Dewji Unveils Co-opted Committee Members at Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club
Dar es Salaam – March 21, 2025: Mohamed Dewji, the newly elected Golf Captain of the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC), has formally announced the co-option of several committee members to bolster the leadership and functionality of the Golf Section.
In a statement released earlier this week, Dewji confirmed that the appointments are in accordance with Article 15(a) of the club’s constitution, underscoring the initiative's legitimacy and alignment with the club’s governing framework.
Highlighting the objective behind the move, Dewji said the expanded committee will play a crucial role in improving the operations and overall experience within the Golf Section. The newly co-opted members include:
- Lady Captain: Sue Van Zyl
- Treasurer: Jiten Lavingia
- Competition Secretary: Abid Omari
- Handicap Secretary: Ali Mamdouhi
- Course Superintendent: Rustom Samji
“With this team in place, the Golf Section Committee looks forward to working closely with all members to foster a vibrant and well-organised golfing environment,” Dewji stated.
He further emphasised that the diverse expertise and commitment of the new committee members will enhance the smooth execution of tournaments, ensure effective course upkeep, and contribute significantly to overall member satisfaction.
The committee has also called on all DGC golfers to remain actively engaged, reinforcing the club’s status as a thriving centre for passionate golf enthusiasts.
Revitalising the Ladies' Golf Section
After a period of relative inactivity, the DGC Ladies’ Section is showing signs of resurgence, led by the return of former Lady Captain Sue Van Zyl. Her reinstatement has been widely welcomed, with many praising her leadership and dedication to women’s golf.
Among her supporters is Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU) President Queen Siraki, who extended her congratulations:
“Congratulations, Sue! We are happy to have you back and to revive our togetherness.”
Wasting no time, Van Zyl has already initiated efforts to breathe new life into the section. A weekly ladies’ tournament, the Ladies’ Fiddle, is set to tee off next Thursday. She has also committed to securing sponsorships for the Monthly Mug tournament and is encouraging increased participation among female golfers.
Expressing her gratitude, Van Zyl said:
“Thank you so much for your compliments. I can only do this if we all work together as a team. I would like to have ladies’ competitions every Thursday, starting next week, giving me time to arrange trophies for future events.”
The initiatives are poised to restore the vibrancy of the Ladies’ Section, reinforcing DGC’s commitment to inclusive and active golfing opportunities for all its members.
