Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey recently opened up about the financial burdens that come with being an African footballer, particularly the widespread expectation known as the "Black Tax." This phenomenon requires successful African athletes to not only support their immediate families but often extend that responsibility to extended relatives and even entire communities.

Bassey, who currently plays for Fulham in the English Premier League, is reportedly earning £45,000 per week. Despite this significant salary, he is quick to point out the financial pressures that come with it.

"Half of what I earn is not mine," Bassey shared candidly during an interview with Three Sixty TV. "Half is for my brothers and the people I have to look after."

For the Super Eagles player, the drive to earn more is not fueled by personal indulgence but by a deep-seated desire to provide for those back home in Nigeria.

"I have to think about the family I have back home and what I can do to help them out," Bassey explained.

While his success is evident, the financial responsibility is something he embraces wholeheartedly. "As mad as it sounds, two or three grand a week can make a difference in looking out for more people," Bassey remarked.
