Benefits of Girls Joining the Scouts
Dar es Salaam, February 22, 2025 – Students, teachers, and parents gathered today at the Mnazi Mmoja grounds in Dar es Salaam to celebrate Global Girl Scouts Day. The event was marked by a call to action for parents to encourage their daughters to join the Scouts, highlighting the numerous benefits this involvement brings to young girls.
The celebration focused on instilling self-awareness, confidence, and patriotism in young girls. The special guest for the occasion was Frola Mgonja, the District Administrative Officer for Ilala, who addressed the crowd with powerful insights on the importance of nurturing young girls.
Frola emphasized that self-awareness in a girl begins at home with supportive and loving parents. "When parents show affection, it becomes easier for children to develop self-confidence and identity," she stated. Frola also promised to work on resolving various challenges that the institution faces and encouraged parents and teachers to inspire young girls to join the Scouts.
Marry Richard, the leader of Girl Guides in Tanzania, also spoke passionately about the role of Scouts in empowering young girls. "Empowering girls helps them build confidence that will open doors for them in the future," she explained. Richard stressed that events like these are crucial for mentally preparing girls for greater opportunities. “By taking part in events like today, we are building a foundation for future leaders,” she added, referring to the potential of nurturing future national leaders like President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
The event was also marked by the enthusiasm of the participants, including students from Kibasila Secondary School. Lisa Renatus, a second-year student at the school, shared her thoughts: "This is my first time participating in the celebrations, and I have learned so much from my peers. Today, I witnessed how confident young girls are when they speak in front of an audience without fear."
The Girl Scouts Day is celebrated annually on February 22, in honor of the founders of the movement, Lord Robert Baden-Powell and his wife Olave, both born on the same day in London.
