TASI Promotes Clean Cooking with Gas Cylinder Distribution in Dodoma
DODOMA, Tanzania – March 8, 2025 – In celebration of International Women’s Day, the Tanzania Awareness and Support Initiative (TASI) took an active role in promoting clean energy solutions by distributing gas cylinders to women in Mlezi Ward, located in Dodoma Region. This initiative aligns with global efforts to encourage cleaner cooking practices and to reduce environmental harm.
International Women’s Day, marked annually on March 8, serves as an important occasion to highlight gender equality, reproductive rights, and various systemic issues that affect women worldwide. This year’s theme, “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment,” set the stage for meaningful discussions involving women, governmental bodies, private enterprises, NGOs, and civil society groups on the need for greater gender equity.
TASI seized the opportunity to support ongoing government initiatives to increase the nationwide adoption of clean energy, especially in rural areas, where traditional cooking methods are still prevalent. In addition to the distribution of gas cylinders, the organization took the time to educate the women on the safe and efficient use of gas and other cleaner energy alternatives, such as electricity.
During the event, Mr. Deus Sigili, TASI’s Project Officer, highlighted the multifaceted benefits of switching to cleaner energy sources. He underscored how this shift not only reduces respiratory illnesses caused by smoke from traditional fuels but also plays a role in mitigating climate change and alleviating the burden on women. Mr. Sigili pointed out that the arduous task of collecting firewood and charcoal is a significant contributor to gender-based violence, as it consumes a considerable amount of time and effort.
“TASI fully supports the government’s efforts under the leadership of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan to ensure that Tanzanians have access to clean cooking energy. We encourage the safe and efficient use of this energy for the benefit of all,” Mr. Sigili said during the ceremony.
The initiative received a warm welcome from the residents of Mlezi Ward, many of whom expressed their gratitude for the support. Several women noted that the distribution of gas cylinders would ease their energy costs and improve their health by reducing their reliance on firewood and charcoal.
