Tanzanian Opposition Hails Democratic Progress Under President Samia

Political Leaders Commend Government for Strengthening Democracy

Political stakeholders, including opposition leaders, have commended Tanzania’s Sixth Administration for fostering democratic growth over the past four years.

Juma Ali Khatib, Chairman of the AdaTadea Party and the Political Parties Council of Tanzania, praised President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s leadership, noting significant improvements in the country’s democratic space.

Speaking to HabariLEO, Khatib highlighted the challenges opposition parties faced before President Samia's tenure, particularly restrictions on public gatherings. He emphasized that under the current administration, the situation has changed, allowing for greater political engagement.

“The government has also strengthened the Political Parties Council by allocating funds to facilitate its operations,” Khatib stated. “Recently, from March 11 to 13, representatives from various political parties convened in Morogoro for a meeting. Today, we can accomplish much more than before.”

He urged the government to provide equal financial support to all political parties, ensuring those with limited resources can effectively reach citizens and present their policies.

“We need to campaign nationwide. Some parties lack the financial capacity to do so. For instance, I plan to run for president in Zanzibar while my colleague competes on the mainland. We should have the ability to travel across the country so that, when the elections conclude, we can say we all competed fairly, and the people chose their leader,” Khatib remarked.

The Impact of President Samia’s 4R Philosophy

Iddi Kiula, Mwanza Regional Secretary for the Civic United Front (CUF), credited President Samia’s governance philosophy—4R (Reconciliation, Resilience, Reforms, and Rebuilding)—for reducing barriers to democracy.

He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to uphold electoral laws with integrity in the upcoming general elections.

“Democracy thrives on justice. Justice must prevail by ensuring that all actions serve the nation’s best interests. This approach will strengthen the country’s democratic foundation,” Kiula affirmed.

Calls for Constitutional Reforms

Tanzania Labour Party (TLP) Chairman Richard Lyimo echoed the sentiment that democracy has significantly improved compared to previous years.

He acknowledged President Samia’s role in reinstating the right of political parties to hold public rallies, a crucial step toward political inclusivity.

However, Lyimo emphasized that further strengthening democracy requires addressing the opposition's demand for a new constitution.

“After the elections, I believe it will be the right time to revisit this issue. Many people have voiced concerns, but I am confident President Samia, being a leader who listens, will take action,” he said.

Political Analyst Weighs In

Political analyst Richard Feruzi underscored the impact of the 4R philosophy, citing the return of key opposition figures from exile as a sign of Tanzania’s improving political climate.

“Through reconciliation, we have witnessed the return of opposition leaders such as Tundu Lissu, Godbless Lema, and Joseph Mbilinyi (Sugu). This is a clear indication that democracy is being restored,” Feruzi stated.

As Tanzania approaches a crucial election year, political leaders and analysts remain hopeful that the positive strides in democratic governance will continue, ensuring a fair and inclusive political environment.
