Kagera's Mining Sector Yields TZS 3.2 Billion Revenue

Government Collects TZS 3.2 Billion from Mining Sector in Kagera

March 19, 2025

The government has successfully collected TZS 3.2 billion in revenue from the mining sector in the Kagera region within the first eight months of the 2024/2025 financial year. These funds come from royalties, fees, and various levies imposed on miners operating in the region.

According to the Ministry of Minerals, Kagera was expected to collect TZS 5.8 billion by the end of the financial year. As of the end of February 2025, the region had already achieved 82% of this target.

Key Revenue Sources in the Mining Sector

The Acting Regional Mining Officer for Kagera, Nobert Mkopi, attributed the impressive revenue collection to effective oversight of the mining sector across the region’s seven municipal councils: Kyerwa, Karagwe, Misenyi, Muleba, Bukoba, Biharamulo, and Ngara.

"Kagera is rich in various minerals, including tin, gold, nickel, wolframite (WO₃), industrial minerals, and construction materials. These mining activities are regulated across all seven district councils in the region," Mkopi stated.

He further elaborated that tin mining in Kyerwa is conducted legally under small-scale mining licenses, with one major exploration license also in place. Tin alone has contributed 32% of the total TZS 3.2 billion collected so far, while the rest of the revenue comes from gold mining, license fees, and permits.

Prospects for Achieving the Revenue Target

Mkopi expressed optimism that the region would meet its financial target by the end of the financial year, given the steady progress in revenue collection.

In conclusion, he encouraged investors from across the country to take advantage of the vast opportunities in Kagera’s mining sector, emphasizing that the region holds significant mineral wealth that can drive economic growth and benefit local communities.
