Biteko Meets LPG Distributors to Discuss Clean Cooking Energy Strategy

On February 20, 2025, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko, held a pivotal meeting with the Tanzania Liquefied Petroleum Gas Distributors Association (TZLPGA) to express his gratitude for their contribution to the implementation of the Clean Cooking Energy Strategy. The meeting aimed to discuss various challenges faced by the association and explore ways to enhance the distribution of cooking gas across the country.

The discussions, held in Dodoma, were attended by the Ministry of Energy's Permanent Secretary, Engineer Felchesmi Mramba, as well as representatives from the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) and the Rural Energy Agency (REA).

Dr. Biteko acknowledged the significant role of the LPG distributors in supporting the government's clean cooking initiatives. He emphasized that the government’s success in achieving its energy goals is rooted in collaboration with the people, particularly the companies involved in LPG distribution.

“We sincerely thank you for your dedication in advancing the Clean Cooking Energy Strategy, launched in 2024. Since its introduction, there has been an increase in the awareness and usage of cooking gas. While LPG is still a costly option, your unwavering support has been crucial,” Dr. Biteko stated.

Promotion of Gas Use to Reach 75% by 2030

In line with the government’s broader goal to ensure 75% of Tanzanians adopt clean cooking energy by 2030, Dr. Biteko urged the LPG companies to expand their services to rural areas. This goal aligns with the January 2025 Energy Compact, which outlines key strategies for the sector.

The meeting also addressed the tax-related challenges faced by the LPG distributors, which may be addressed in the upcoming Finance Bill to be presented during the 2025/2026 Budget Session.

“We are here today to hear your feedback on potential improvements in the Finance Bill. Please let us know how we can make it easier for you to provide services to the people,” Dr. Biteko concluded.
